James' credits start as a background dancer in 'Junior Showtime'. At this time he also worked with Diana Dors in 'Queenie's Castle'later going on to train at the York Academy of Speech and Dramatic Art (Leeds branch) and also Yorkshire College of Music, Headingley. James later became a member of The Actors Centre at 'the old school' Manchester and appeared in workshops with Murray Melvin, Brigit Forsyth and a show directed by Clive Swift.

James was the regular pianist for 'The Boland Show' (Sky TV) and composed and sang ditties for the guests which included Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth, Linda Lusardi and has had interviews for BBC radio Leeds Caribbean programme.
